Highlands, North Carolina

This past weekend, Riley and I were able to take a little vacation (otherwise known as our "treat yo self" weekend) to Highlands, North Carolina. Just a little over two hours away from Atlanta, we were able to escape to the quaint little mountain town and eat SO much yummy food!

Both Riley and I had visited Highlands but it was some time ago, so being able to go back and check it out now that we are older, really made it a little adventure. On our way up to our cabin we made a quick stop at Jaemor Farms. Being that it was a Saturday, it was fairly busy with families running around every which way. We made our way in to the large market where Riley picked up some jalapeno cheddar bread, pimento cheese, both home-made of course. Lastly, after snapping a few pics we grabbed a road-trip essential - boiled peanuts. We were very happy we made the decision to stop at Jaemor Farms and we definitely agreed to go back next fall to get some apples and maybe a bottle of muscadine wine.

When we finally arrived to our little cabin, we were so so impressed with the space! We had searched and searched for reasonably priced places to stay and stumbled across the cabin on VRBO and could not help but book it. To be honest, the pictures did not do it justice on the website. Our ride up consisted of us wondering just what we would find waiting for us but thankfully we walked in and were SO pleased. The cabin had a huge kitchen and a great back porch that was perfectly tucked away from our neighbors. Riley made us a fire almost every day, twice a day and it was so awesome! There is nothing like reading a good book by a fire while you're in the mountains.

As far as food and where we ate while we were in Highlands, whoa buddy, we ate good. We were also very surprised and happy when we realized we did not spend nearly as much money as we thought we were going to on this little getaway. The most notable places we went to were:

Cyprus - We had brunch here and it was LITERALLY (and I am not even being dramatic) the best brunch I have ever had. I had the Black Forrest Omelette and Riley had the Peppered Benedict.

Wild Thyme - We considered this our "fancy" dinner that we splurged on. Not only was it so delicious, we were in and out in under an hour because we gobbled up our meals so so fast. The Lump Crab Fillo Purses appetizer was unbelievable and the Mountain Trout I ordered was served with this rich and creamy polenta that I will have dreams about. Riley ordered a Shrimp and Tasso Linguine dish that he was very very happy with. We ate as much as we could and still took home boxes because of the large portions.

Bistro on Main - Just seeing the menu alone made me want to eat here for lunch on our last day before we headed out of town. Riley and I both ordered the Grilled Cheese with Lump Crab Meat and a side of Lobster Bisque. The bisque was very good, creamy and flavorful, but we both agreed the sandwich was a let down. It needed something extra to give it a little kick - like a chipotle mayo or something. Regardless, we got to sit outside with the awesome weather and munch on some Buffalo and Blue Cheese Chips as an app, so you can say we left very pleased.

In between all of our great meals and walking around the cutie little town of Highlands, we also went and hiked Whiteside Mountain. The views from the top were awesome and there were so many places to go and look out that it truly made you feel like you were not up there with tons of people!

If you have never been to Highlands, I truly believe it is somewhere you have got to see. Even just for a day to walk around the town and grab lunch, I think you'd be a very happy camper.

Lastly, Riley and I are late to the trend but we had to grab a pack of Bean Boozled while we were out! We filmed a little bit of us doing the Bean Boozled Challenge until the camera stopped recording lol check it out!
